Hey there FINE ladies!!!
Quite often, when we get together and check-in, the two of us ask one another how things are going. Often, the quickest answer is, “I’m fine.” But it is often accompanied by a sigh, an eye-roll, slumped shoulders, and an essence of avoidance, or a wish that we could just blink our eyes or nod our heads into a new, fresh reality. Life can be hard day-to-day, and so many things can influence our moods, our perspectives, our potential to turn challenges into progress.
Somewhere we heard a reference to the acronym F.I.N.E. that really summed it up for us when we are feeling “less than fine”:
F - Freaked out
I - Insecure
N - Neurotic
E - Emotional
We thought this could be a “checklist” for those days when you just don’t feel fine at all. One day, we went through the usual greeting, and I said back to her, “I’m FINE.” (imagine a tone that is not a bit uplifting or reassuring). The statement came with a knowing look that said, “You know, I’m really not so fine today”. We laughed and sat down and poured it out, a bit more transparently that time. It was freeing and reassuring to just let it out and to share those negative feelings. Once it was out, it felt better, and we talked through ways to switch our thinking. We decided that to strive for “Better Than Fine” was more healthy, productive and useful. So, we have created our own new acronym. We thought of new words that could be helpful to us as we go forward:
F - Free
I - Influencer
N - Normal
E - Empowered
These words are going to point us toward using who we were made to be for the good of others and to honor God’s creation within each one of us. In the book of Ephesians (2:10), Paul tells us that “we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so that we can do the good things He planned for us long ago”. God is the ultimate artist, and His perspective of people and their value is far-reaching and so very different from anything we can imagine through our limited scope. Jesus’ love covers all of our insecurities, all the places where we might fall short, struggles we face, and He can see the purpose of gifts we have that we can’t see.
Over the next several posts, we are going to take a closer look into each one of these words in our new acronym, and how they will motivate us toward BETTER than Fine. We can be FREE from the things that challenge us, the feelings that hinder our progress, the people that might hurt us; and FREE for new perspectives. We can be INFLUENCERS, outwardly. We can aim to influence others with what we do with the gifts we have been blessed with, and through the experiences we have gone through.
We are all NORMAL. Normal in the sense that anything unique about us makes us beautiful and important, and should not be used as a basis for negative comparison or competition. We are all part of a great big group of normal people that can be available to have a great impact on the world, by simply being ourselves. And we are all EMPOWERED within ourselves, with what we have - tools, gifts, talents, and personality traits that give us the power to love greatly in this world and make a difference. We each have the power to change difficult things, one thing at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time.
Ladies, this is our invitation to you. Let’s change that essence of “fine”. Let’s make it a call out to think of all that we have and all that we do as opportunities to be BETTER than just fine.
