Comfort Zones

Hey FINE Ladies!

I love being comfortable. How ‘bout you? I love to put on my comfy pants and slippers when I get home from work. I love to snuggle up in my comfy blanket when I wake up and do my quiet time. When I sink into my bed at night, I literally say, “ahhh, luxury”, (ask Mark) because it is so comfortable. I love comfort food. My comfort foods are mashed potatoes and gravy and meatloaf. I have a comfort zone. What exactly is a comfort zone? According to the dictionary on my iPhone, it is a “place or situation where one feels safe or at ease and without stress”. I like my comfort zone. I would say I LOVE my comfort zone. Believe me, it is literally a zone. Kind of like an invisible fence around me. I feel safe inside of this zone. If I step out of this zone I do feel stress OR, if someone comes in my zone, uninvited, I feel stress.

Its mid-year and I have been pondering my goals and dreams. In January I picked my word of the year and it happens to be “Dream”. The other day I opened my goal planner to the beginning of the year and I saw the words that I penned myself, “step out of comfort zone”. I also added stickers “take a leap of faith” and “follow your heart”. That was pretty bold of me. Then I thought long and hard about it. If I want to achieve my dreams and goals, I will have to step out of this comfort zone.

The Skit Guys “Comfort Zone” is a hilarious skit about Jack. Jack is happy because he is in his comfort zone. Jack has dreams, desires and ambitions and he wants his life to count for something. However, that will never happen because “life lived inside the comfort zone, is life lived outside of God’s will”. Whoa! It is so true. Where is my faith inside comfort zone?

I was reminded of when the Israelites crossed the Jordan River. It was harvest season and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. Read Joshua 3. To continue on in their journey they had to cross the river. God instructed Joshua to give the command that when they reached the bank of the river they had to step into it. Vs 13 states “As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall”.

If I want to continue on in my journey toward my dreams and goals I must continue moving forward. I will approach things that will make me feel uncomfortable. I will have to step out of my comfort zone and put my big toe in the water. In Joshua 3, it states the Living God was among them. God is with me, parting my Jordan River.

One last thing. When I was in El Salvador I had a very interesting conversation with a wise teenager. He said to me that he recently read in the devo “When God doesn’t make sense” that comfort meant “together strength”. WHOA! That actually made me tear up. For example, when we are in pain and someone comes alongside us, they actually bring us comfort and strength. “Together strength”. Let’s take this on a twisty road regarding our comfort zone. Let’s give each other “together strength” when exiting the comfort zone. Sure, we can give each other “together strength” inside the comfort zone, but we know that is not what God wants.

So, what does this all mean to you and me right now? Revisit your dreams, goals and desires. If you haven’t written any out, do so now. Find yourself an accountability partner, a FINE sister, who will come alongside you as your “together strength”. Share with her your comfort zone and what is waiting for you once you step outside this zone. Pray and trust that God is with you on this journey. Dip your toe into the water and watch and wait to see what God will do. And remember this on your journey, “life lived inside the comfort zone, is life lived outside of God’s will”. Thanks Skit Guys!

Love you,

Sharon
